Non-Hindu students evicted from Puri Jagannath temple

BHUBANESWAR: Around 120 school students from Jamshedpur were on Sunday evicted from the Jagannath Temple in Puri after it was known that they were non-Hindus.
The 12th century shrine is off limits to non-Hindus. The students and their teachers, who were ignorant of the temple rule, faced humiliation near the baisi pahanch (twenty-two steps) after a group of priests questioned their religion.
They came to Puri on study tour, sources said. "Though all the students were Indians, many of them were non-Hindus. We immediately intervened and politely asked them to vacate the shrine precinct," temple's public relations officer Laxmidhar Pujapanda told TOI.
He denied the students and teachers were insulted by priests. The incident rekindled memories of unpalatable incidents, involving non-Hindus facing wrath from some uncouth priests in the past. While foreigners were beaten up and thrown outside the shrine, an American woman last year cried inconsolably after being jeered by a few priests. High drama unfolded in front of the Puri Jagannath temple on December 10, 2011 after a group of foreign tourists staged a symbolic protest demanding entry into the shrine.
The visitors, many of whom were ISKCON pilgrims, claimed to be converted-Hindus and insisted the temple authorities to let them enter the shrine. Earlier on December 23, 2010, a tourist from New Zealand demonstrated in front of the shrine demanding entry.

Month long Chaitra Jatra ends at Tara Tarini Hill Shrine as faith enlivens tradition

With the chanting of the holy names of Maa Tara Tarini, recitation of hymns, Mantras and Jagna on the Fourth Tuesday, the month long Chaitra Jatra came to an end at the famous Tara Tarini Hill Shrine near Berhampur in Odisha. Considered as one of the biggest religious fairs in India, the Chaitra Jatra at this hill shrine has centuries old history behind it.
It is noteworthy that of the 4 Adi Shakti Peethas and other major Shakti Peethas in India, it is only in the Tara Tarini Peetha, considered as the Sthana Pith (Breast Shrine) of Adi Shakti that the Chaitra Jatra is held over the entire month of Chaitra whereas in most other shrines it is held for just one day or the Nine days coinciding with Navratra culminating on Ram Navami.
On the last Tuesday, following the age-old traditions, the Sevakas opened the sanctum sanctorum of the temple past the midnight on Monday. After Snana(the divine bath), Majana and Maha Arati the Amruta Kalasha or the first Bhoga was offered to the goddesses at around 3.55 a.m in the morning. Then the goddesses went for a Parikrama of the temple. After the completion of the Parikrama, large number of devotees who gathered on the hilltop to take the first glimpse of Maa were allowed for Darshan. The Darshan continued non-stop till the late evening of Tuesday.
Like other Tuesdays of this month, around two to three lakh devotees gathered on the fourth and last Tuesday of Chaitra month in the Shrine. The large gathering of devotees and their prayers filled with emotion and enthusiasm surcharged the atmosphere of the ancient Shrine.
Around one thousand barbers were engaged in tonsuring the heads of around five thousand newborn babies on this occasion.
As per traditional beliefs devotees preferred to climb the 999 holy steps to reach the hill top though transportation facilities to the hill top by Arial Rope way and special Buses were made available. They climbed 999 steps as a penance to get the blessing of the deities.
As per initial reports, so far around 20 lakh people have visited the shrine for Darshan during the month, including the four Tuesdays.
People from far off places like North and South India and from the neighbouring states like Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Assam, Chhattisgarh, many Sadhakasfrom the Tara Pith and other famous Shakti Shrines of India, many Buddhists and Hindu researchers from Nepal and many people from abroad were present during the Chaitra Mela.
A unique feature of this Shrine is that large number of people flocked to the Shrine from various nearby villages in their bullock carts along with their kith and kin. There were also large number of people seen feasting all across the Shrine as a thanksgiving gesture to the Goddesses. The fair comprising rural artisans had large number of buyers and onlookers. Many devotees who could not take the pain of reaching the hilltop made it a point to worship the sacred Ratnagiri Mountain (Tarini Parvat) from a distance.
It may be noted that over the years the number of visitors to this hill shrine have been growing steadily during this Chaitra festivals. As a result, large number of visitors and mainly the elderly persons who find it difficult to reach the hilltop by taking the overcrowded steps and special buses generally prefer the aerial Ropeway to the hill top which is first of its kind in Eastern India. But, the capacity of the existing aerial ropeway is limited. So, sensing the need to accommodate the ever increasing number of devotees, the Tara Tarini Development Board (TTDB) has decided to raise the capacity and frequency of Aerial rope-way service in collaboration with ‘USHA Pvt. Ltd’ a reputed Rope Way service provider in the country. It is expected that by this time next year the carrying capacity of the Aerial rope Way will increase many folds.
On the occasion of the last Tuesday the District administration, Temple administration and Development Board made wide range arrangements like drinking water, Prasad, Transportation, Primary health care facility, traffic control, and police deployment for peaceful Darshan of the devotees. The office bearers, volunteers of the TTDB, different NGOs, voluntary organizations, media houses, corporate houses and local residents extended their helping hand through out the month to the devotees who came from various parts of the country.

On Tuesday which was the fourth and last one of the month, around two lakh devotees visited the shrine. Visitors in large numbers thronged the famous Shakti shrine from the wee hours till late evening. Devotees started thronging the spot from Monday night.......................... Link..The Hindu

Berhampur Nagarika Manch demands resumption of Industrial Estate railway passenger halt

A citizens' delegation met the General Manager of East Coast Railway in Bhubnaeswar with the demand to reopen the passenger halt in industrial estate area of Berhampur. This delegation was led former Deputy Speaker of State Assembly Ramchandra Panda and included leaders of Silpanchal Passenger Halt Sangarm Samity (SPHSS), an organisation fighting for the demand and Berhampur Nagarika Manch (BNM). During discussion they pointed out that this was a demand of people of Berhampur since last three decades. There have been protest demonstrations and rail-roko for the demand in the past. According to general secretary of SPHSS, Abani Kumar Gaya, passenger halt with the name Lanjipalli Passenger Halt was recorded in the railway timetable in 1946. But for some reason this passenger halt which was near present industrial estate was closed down. With the expansion of the city and rise of population in the area a passenger halt in the area has become an extreme need, Mr Panda said. In November 1998 at a meeting of the railway coordination committee recommendation was made for establishment of a passenger halt in industrial estate area. In 2010, East Coast Railway authorities had agreed in principle to establishment of this halt near industrial estate.  The Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC), southern division had also in the past recommended the establishment of this passenger halt. A delegation of railway engineers had also made a spot visit in the past to prepare a feasibility report. But the passenger halt has not materialized yet. During discussion this delegation also demanded better amenities in the DMUs connecting Berhampur with Bhubaneswar. They also wanted the Gunupur-Puri passenger to be made an express train and a new passenger to be started between Palasa and Puri.

Road mishaps claim 3,900 lives every year in Odisha

More than 9,000 road accidents take place every year in Odisha that kill over 3,900 and leave 11,000 plus others injured. This was revealed by chief secretary Bijay Kumar Patnaik while addressing at the closing ceremony of the State Level Road Safety Week. Principal Secretary, commerce & transport GK Dhal, transport commissioner Surendra Kumar and Khurda collector Roopa Mishra were present at the meeting.
While rash driving, overloading, untrained drivers and poor roads are among the factors that have led to the rise in fatal accidents, a majority (94 per cent) of them were due to drunk driving and human error, the chief secretary pointed out. In the last two years alone, 7,464 people lost their lives in road mishaps.
The state government has now decided to concentrate on proper training to the untrained drivers and initiated talks with Maruti Suzuki and many other automakers to set up modern driving training institutions in the state, Patnaik said.
Odisha is the third state to set up a driving training institute with the help of the largest automaker, Ashok Leyland in Jajpur district. Every year, more than 3,000 drivers would be trained in this institution, he said. Dhal revealed that the state government would frame tough rules against drunken driving. Such drivers’ licences would be cancelled.
He informed that there are 30 lakh vehicles in the state, and the number is rising at a rate of six per cent to seven per cent every year.
The number would reach the 45-lakh mark during the next 10 years. The transport commissioner said that every year the country loses Rs one lakh crore due to road accidents, which is three per cent of the nation’s GDP (Gross Domestic Product).
Road accident have turned epidemic with 94 per cent of the mishaps being caused by untrained and drunken drivers. He said that the state government is mulling use of speed governors in three-wheelers and four-wheelers.

Orissa a huge investment destination: ASSOCHAM

Despite the raging issues of land acquisition and local resistance, industrialisation has gone off in a big way in the State. About 45.9 per cent of the total outstanding investments had actually gone on ground while 51 per cent of the live investment projects were past the announcement stage, an independent study by the the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) has revealed.  Only 3 per cent of the projects were hindered due to reasons like obstructions, land acquisition, cancellations due to market policy and obtaining environment clearances.
Releasing the study “Sustaining Growth Momentum in Orissa” on Thursday, the industry body stated that the State had 574 live investment projects to the tune of Rs 11.3 lakh crore as of 2010. Registering a growth of over 19 per cent year-on-year, it had attracted 72 fresh live investments notching over Rs 1.8 lakh crore in 2010.
Orissa, in fact, has notched a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.8 per cent during the last decade surpassing its regional peers West Bengal’s 6.7 per cent, Bihar’s 7.3 per cent and Assam’s 5.3 per cent, Chairman of ASSOCHAM Regional Development Council and CMD of Radico Khaitan Group Lalit Khaitan said.
Projecting a roadmap for the future, the industry body has emphasised on greater thrust on relatively unexplored areas with great potential. The study has identified marine and fisheries as a key growth sector. With such a vast coastline and sweet water resources flourishing with marine potential, the State has not been able to capitalise on the opportunities in the sector. “Marine and inland fisheries contribute only 1.1 per cent of GDP with 4.8 per cent decadal growth. Focus should be shifted to attracting investment to this lucrative sector,” Chairman of ASSOCHAM Electronics Council Anirudh Dhoot said.

By Priya Pryadarshini, Bhanja Bihar, Berhampur
Ganjam is the hub of classical and traditional beauty. Be it in the terms of song, dance, drama or theatrical show, Ganjam has a unique position in all these regards. Among all ‘Prahalad Nataka’ stands tall in all respective quarters of the culture. The tale is based on the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, ‘Nursingha’. Prahalad the great devotee of Lord Vishnu goes against the will of his father and worships Vishnu. Hiranyakashyap the father of Prahalad declares himself as the God and rebels against the almighty for which he gets punished.
The play is developed from the stories of mythological books like ‘Bhagat Gita’, ‘Vishnu Purana’ and ‘Nursingha Purana’. The act is full of emotions varying from courage to anger.

King Ramakrushna Chotray of Jalanta was the first to initiate the production of this act. He called the famous dramatist and musician Gaurahar Parcha of Paralakhamundi who scripted the play for the first time. It was the first enacted in the region of Jalanta. It is primarily an Odiya play. Yet, the neighboring Telugu speaking regions do translate it into their own language and do perform it in their own areas. It is a play which has classical music as its main element.
In Ganjam the play is also called as ‘Rajanataka’. It continues for three to seven nights. The play though not edited in the form of episode or serial number has got a special way of presenting style. The presenter first starts the act by reciting the ‘Gurudeva’, ‘Ganesh’ and ‘Sarada Vandana’. After that the summary of the script is presented. Next the characters are called on the stage and the presentation goes on.
‘Prahalad Nataka’ is famous because of its presentation style and subject matter. Mostly the dance format is used for description of each character that also speaks of the emotions like devotion and pride.

Berhampur-Bangladesh power transmission line mooted

Bangladesh preparing to import Indian power
DHAKA: Bangladesh will allocate Taka 17 billion (USD 245 million) in its annual budget next month for constructing the infrastructure necessary to import 500 MW of electricity from India, an official said. Finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith has consented to the allocation.
A senior official of the power ministry said that the allocation would be used for building a transmission line from Berhampur in India's Orissa state to Bheramara in Bangladesh and to set up a substation. The official, however, said that the project may need more than the sum allocated, New Age newspaper said Monday. Energy-starved Bangladesh signed an energy deal with India in January when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited New Delhi. Opposition leader Khaleda Zia has criticised the government for creating "an artificial power crisis" that would require power import without going through tenders and other trade procedures.
Economists and businessmen at a seminar organised Sunday called for "transparency" in power deals and asked the government to take a long-term view of the country's power requirements.

Lakhs of turtles nest in Rushikulya beach near Taratarini Hill Shrine,Orissa

Over one lakh endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles have laid eggs on the beach adjoining the Rushikulya river mouth near Taratarini Hill Shrine in district Ganjam, Orissa since March 13 as scientists observed the phenomenon with interest. The eggs are expected to hatch in the first week of May, about 45 days after the mass nesting. Rushikulya river mouth is just 20km from the famous Shakti Shrine Taratarini and around 40 km from Berhampur city, Orissa.

While 6,000 turtles emerged from the sea to lay eggs in the wee hours of March 13, around 65,000 swarmed the four-km long sandy beach between Gokharakuda and Kantiagada the next day. The number of nesting turtles came down thereafter.

Kartik Shanker, a turtle biologist from the Indian Institute of Science - Bangalore and Basudeb Tripathy of the Wildlife Institute of India, who are here to study the pattern of mass nesting, said the laying of eggs could continue sporadically for a few more days.

It may be noted that last year during the month of Chaitra more than 17 lakh people visited the hill shrine. The TTDB authorities hope this year the devotees would increase further. The festivities had started at this hill shrine from Monday evening. Throughout the night there were cultural programmes to entertain the visitors to the shrine. Although this hill shrine boasts to be having the only ropeway to a hilltop in the State, yet most of the devotees due to their traditional belief decided to climb to the top of the hill shrine. They walked on the ghat road or used the steep stair case. They climbed 999 steps as a penance to the deities.
Rural fair
A rural fair was on at the foothill. Urbanites who had reached the spot as picnickers enjoyed the village fair. Forgetting mental blockades related to hygiene for some time they relished fresh sugarcane and colourful sweets sold by the roadside vendors at this rural fair. The beautification and developmental works were taken up at the hill shrine by the TTDB from donations from the public. The State government in cooperation with the Ganjam district administration has formed the TTDB for development of this hill shrine into a major tourist destination. This board includes eminent persons of Orissa especially from southern region. The TTDB has now replaced the old temple with a new one in the traditional ‘Rekha' style of Orissa.

Students’ body demands Bank of Odisha HQs at Berhampur

Berhampur: While praising the recent long-awaited decision of the State Government to form a sub-committee under the State Revenue Minister for exploring the establishment of Bank of Odisha, the South Odisha Students’ Association (SOSA) has requested Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for establishment of Bank of Odisha with its headquarters at Berhampur.

Having taken the logical first step, we do expect that the State Government would announce the formation of the Bank of Odisha with its corporate headquarters at Berhampur as it is logical that the rewards must go together with performance, stated president of SOSA RP Tripathy in a letter to the Chief Minister. The headquarters of the proposed Bank of Odisha at Berhampur in recognition of its standing in banking, business and commerce in the State will send the right signals and help the cities of Odisha focus on their core competencies, he wrote in his letter. This will become the first State-level headquarters of any establishment of any sector that will be located in Berhampur city. Further, the headquarters of Bank of Odisha in Berhampur will ensure distributive justice in the establishment of State institutions and the State Government must give Berhampur the due recognition that it deserves through this initiative, he added.
Justifying Berhampur as the ideal location for establishing the bank headquarters, Tripathy stated in the letter that Berhampur city has contributed immensely to the vibrancy, cultural and social life and above all economic growth of Odisha. Even with inadequate State support, Berhampur city has carved a niche for itself and has grown exponentially in the spheres of business, transport and commerce. It still remains the only hope and bright spot in the utterly backward region of southern Odisha. The city has always been a great centre for business and commerce since the days of the British Raj and most importantly it has flourished solely based on local entrepreneurship and initiatives, he pointed out.
He further stated that the Greater Berhampur region with a population of close to seven lakhs is the second biggest urban cluster in the State and supportive Government policies are the need of the hour for its future growth that in turn will propel the growth of the State.
In the past, the shifting of Government offices like the State headquarters of OSRTC, jail training academy, cooperative training academy etc from Berhampur led to resentment among the locals and the State Government must undo these erroneous decisions through the establishment of the proposed Bank of Odisha with its headquarters at Berhampur, which the city rightly deserves, he observed.

Citizens angry as Berhampur is repeatedly ignored by the Railways

Following is an excerpt from a news report in http://www.tathya.in/
It seems the nerve centre of the Southern Odisha is on boil.
Angry citizens are sending e-mails to the CM Naveen Patnaik and other high functionaries of the State and Central Government over the callous attitude meted out to Berhampur.
And the BJD MP from Berhampur is facing flak due to his lip seal approach on burning issues.
Intelligentsia, young students and social activist are sending e-mails venting their anger and frustration over apathetic approach of the BJD Government as it is ignoring the genuine problems of the area.
Taking the lead R P Tripathy has blamed both State and Centre in neglecting the Berhampur time and again.
While the Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Puri railway stations are being developed as World class and Modern Railway Stations, Berhampur Rail Station does not figure in the list of Indian Railway Board.
Echoing his voice Prasanna Kumar Mishra, former Union Secretary lashed on the authorities leaving Berhampur like a way side Railway Station.
Berhampur station must be developed into a terminal facility with trains going to Koraput, Parlakhemundi, Chennai, Kolkata,Surat etc.
It is a pity that the station still has the look and facility of yet another roadside station, lamented he.
Abhisek Mishra, an angry young man from the southern zone has blamed it on the cine-actor turned BJD MP from Berhampur .
Mr.Mishra alleged that Siddhanta Mahapatra has turned out to be a puppet politician playing inconsequential role in state and national politics.
Siddhanta a leading actor of Ollywood joined politics in 2009 and has won as the BJD MP with huge votes from Berhampur Lok Sabha seat.
His performance inside the parliament is far from satisfactory and even tribal first time MPs of South Odisha and his colleagues from Nabarangpur, Phulbani and Koraput are doing better job than him.
This is really a pity that Berhampur parliamentary seat which has sent national stalwarts to the Lok sabha has come to be represented by undeserving leaders like the present one.
There are so many issues that confront Berhampur and South Odisha, said he.
Starting from water crisis and negligence by Indian Railways, undue delay in NH-5 golden quadrilateral project and NH-217 bypass for the city, undue delay in STPI project to establishment of IIIT and NID in Berhampur, inclusion of Berhampur under JNNURM to Unitary University status for Khallikote College, list is unending.
But, the MP stays in Bhubaneswar and hardly visits the city, let alone stay in Berhampur city and understand the problems of the people, though claims to be a Son of the Soil, lamented Mr.Mishra.
Even inside parliament he hardly asks questions or raises any issue of public interest, pointed out he.
It is still to be known whether the MP is serious about his role or just thinks his present job to be an extension of his acting profession.
But, one thing the MP must keep in mind that in Politics if some one fails to deliver there is no chance for a re-take and people just dump lock stock and barrel though they may continue to appreciate acting talents of the Ollywood star, warned Abhisek.
Siba Prasad Tripathy on a positive note has pointed out that Berhampur and Rourkela happen to be the two largest cities of Odisha, after the State capital.
And both are primary rail heads of Southern and Western Odisha respectively catering to millions of the people.
But, it is unfortunate that people have time and again brought to the notice of the Chief Minister the greatly felt need for a direct train service between these two cities.
In fact, till the year 2000, the Hirakhand Express used to connect these two cities but the train was withdrawn causing severe inconvenience to the general public and commuters.
A direct train service between Berhampur-Rourkela needs to be considered which may take the route Berhampur-Bhubaneswar-Cuttack-Keonjhar-Chakradharpur-Rourkela route.
This will not only connect almost 10 districts and four major urban centres i.e., Berhampur, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Rourkela but will bring South Odiissa and Western Odisha a closer to each other leading to their development. In view of its need and being a long standing demand of the masses may kindly be considired at the earliest.
Ajay Sahu has also pointed out that approximately 10 lakh Ganjam people stay at Surat since many decades.
Mr.Sahu has demanded with the Indian Railway Board authorities should add a few coaches which can be de-linked at Khurdha junction and can proceed to Berhampur-Paralakhemundi and Gunupur.
This will benefit the commuters in a big way, said he.
